Carsten Träger, a long‑time member of the SPD and a Bundestag representative, has died unexpectedly at the age of 52. The Bundestag’s parliamentary state secretary at the Federal Ministry for the Environment was announced on Sunday by the Bavarian SPD as a loss to the party.
Over more than three decades Träger shaped the SPD with passion, conviction, and a clear set of values. He served in several local roles, including district chair in Middle Franconia and district chairman. His career also included time as a member of the German parliament, chair of the Bavarian SPD state group, and, most recently, as parliamentary secretary of state in the Environment Ministry.
Träger was the Bavarian SPD’s lead candidate in the most recent federal election campaign. His advocacy for social justice, community cohesion and a sustainable future resonated far beyond Bavaria, according to party leaders. The state leaders of the Bavarian SPD, Ronja Endres and Sebastian Roloff, described him as “a passionate fighter for social justice and for the protection of our basic livelihoods”.
