Former Deputy President of the Bundestag and former deputy chairman of the FDP, Wolfgang Kubicki, plans to run for the position of the party’s new chairman at the convention scheduled for late May. Speaking to “Bild am Sonntag” Kubicki stated his desire for a party that will lead political discussions in the country with renewed confidence, rather than merely following them.
He asserted that Germany needs an FDP that has a clear political substance and communicates clearly, rather than one “bogged down in academic discussions” noting, “Germany is not waiting for an FDP that is lost in academic debates, but for one that built this country: clear in its political content and just as clear in its language. For liberty”. Kubicki added that he would make a pledge to his party delegates during the May gathering, assuring them of his commitment to making the party successful again. According to a report from “Bild am Sonntag” Kubicki has nominated the Bavarian FDP politician Martin Hagen as his choice for general secretary to usher in this new beginning.
Other individuals expected to stand for election at the late May party convention include the current chairman, Christian Dürr, and the North Rhine-Westphalian state chairman, Henning Höne.
Support for Kubicki is also coming from the CDU. Former Schleswig-Holstein state premier Peter Harry Carstensen described his long-time associate to “Bild am Sonntag” as “currently the face of the FDP-someone people look at and immediately know what he stands for”.
