Oliver Blatt, the CEO of the GKV-Spitzenverband, anticipates that the number of statutory health insurance funds will continue to shrink in the years to come. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Blatt stated his conviction that the sector might not maintain its current number of funds even within the next decade. He noted that the process of funds assessing potential mergers based on economic sense is already ongoing.
Blatt was firm in rejecting any mandated state intervention in this process. As an economist, he argued that the answer must come from market competition, asking rhetorically why the government should dictate the final number. He pointed to the diverse needs of the populace-some preferring fully digital services while others require physical local contacts-suggesting these differences will resolve naturally.
He supported this view by presenting historical data, reminding readers that the sector has already undergone massive consolidation, reducing the number of funds from over 400 back in the year 2000 to just over 90 today.
