Trump Vows US Naval Blockade at Strait of Hormuz Amid Tensions with Iran

Donald Trump announced that the US Navy is to block all vessels attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Trump, the blockage aims to prevent Iran from profiting from “illegal tolls” paid by ships passing through the waterway. The US Navy would be tasked with inspecting any vessels in international waters found to have made such a payment. Furthermore, the plan includes destroying mines that are alleged to have been laid in the Strait of Hormuz by Iran. This announcement follows unsuccessful talks between the US and Iran in Pakistan, during which Trump stated that no agreement was reached on the “really important” nuclear issue. The US President accused Tehran of “global extortion” via the blockade of the strait, adding that other nations would join the US blockade, though he did not specify which countries those would be.
