Germany Maintains Diplomatic Ties with Iran Despite Talks Standoff

The German government maintains that diplomatic relations remain intact between Germany and Iran. A spokesperson for the Foreign Office told the dpa news agency on Monday that because there is an Iranian embassy in Germany, the government acknowledges and maintains diplomatic ties with the state of Iran. Previously, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) engaged in discussions with his Iranian counterpart on Thursday, describing the meeting as one that was “focused on the matter at hand”. However, the spokesperson noted that no such further contact has occurred since that time. This contrasts with earlier statements by Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), who had previously described a significant shift in diplomatic relations with Iran. On Thursday, Merz stated that after a period of “long silence”-which he attributed to “serious reasons”-the government would restart talks with Tehran. These renewed discussions, he explained, would happen “in coordination with the United States and European partners”. Merz’s stated objective was for Germany to contribute its own part to the success of negotiations between Iran and the US. Nevertheless, the talks held in Pakistan reportedly failed temporarily over the weekend.
