German Hospitality Revenue Stagnates in February Despite Modest Year-on-Year Gains

In February 2026, preliminary figures released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) showed that turnover in the German hospitality sector remained flat by real (price-adjusted) terms compared to the previous month, showing no change (0.0 percent) when comparing calendar and season-adjusted figures. However, when looking at nominal terms (unadjusted for price changes), turnover increased by 0.4 percent. Compared to February 2025 of the previous year, turnover actually fell by 4.6 percent, although it did rise nominally by 2.3 percent.

Reviewing records from January 2026, the hospitality sector saw a real decline of 4.3 percent compared to December 2025 (this figure revises a previous preliminary value of -3.9 percent). Furthermore, nominal turnover dropped by 0.5 percent in January 2026 compared to December 2025 (revising a prior preliminary estimate of 0.0 percent).

Breaking down the sector, hotels and other accommodation establishments recorded a turnover increase in February 2026 of 2.4 percent in real terms and 2.6 percent in nominal terms when comparing it to January 2026. Year-over-year comparison to February 2025 showed a real decrease of 0.3 percent, while nominal turnover rose by 4.1 percent. The restaurant industry, according to the Federal Office, experienced a real decline of 1.1 percent and a nominal decline of 1.2 percent compared to January 2026. Year-over-year, however, the restaurant sector saw a real drop of 6.2 percent but managed a nominal increase of 1.7 percent compared to February 2025.
