SPD Slams CDU’s Public Pressure, Calling Chancellor’s Warnings “Counterproductive”

The demands made by CDU Chairman Friedrich Merz toward his coalition partner, the SPD, are meeting with resistance. Speaking to the “Tagesspiegel”, SPD Member of the Bundestag Ralf Stegner remarked that the Chancellor’s public admonishments were “somewhat unusual and counterproductive”. Stegner pointed out that Merz had recently argued that all matters should be handled privately and represented cohesively in public, suggesting it would have been wise for Merz to adhere to that same principle when addressing the SPD.

The former SPD vice chair added that while politics involves battle, the SPD will not falter merely because Merz speaks out. Regarding policy substance, Stegner asserted that the SPD’s vision for reforms does not involve measures that actively hurt people-a message directed toward the CDU/Union.

This exchange followed Merz’s push for more decisive reforms during discussions with the SPD on Monday evening, after which Merz had stated that he would address the coalition partner once again that evening, noting, “I will talk very seriously with the coalition partner tonight”.
