Donald Trump gave an account of the attack that took place at a gala dinner in Washington, where he, several members of the US government, and over a thousand journalists were in attendance. Speaking on “60 Minutes” on CBS Sunday night, Trump stated that he was not concerned after the incident, noting, “I know that life; we live in a crazy world”.
Regarding his own involvement during the incident, Trump admitted to making the situation more challenging for security personnel. When a security agent instructed him to get on the floor following gunfire, he remained standing initially, stating, “I wanted to see what was going on; I didn’t want to make it too easy for him”.
During the interview, Trump also addressed quotes pulled from the assailant’s supposed “manifesto”. The text included the statement, “I am no longer willing to allow a pedophile, a rapist, and traitor to let my hands be soiled by their crimes” which the assailant reportedly sent to people close to him beforehand. The US President reacted with evident anger, retorting, “Well, I was expecting you to read this, because I knew you would, because you are awful people”. He strongly denied being a pedophile or having committed any rape, stating instead that he was “completely cleared”. Trump then declared, “You shouldn’t read this on “60 Minutes”. You are a disgrace. But please, let’s end the interview”.
Meanwhile, former President Barack Obama also commented on the event, asserting that violence has no place in democracy. He described the attack as “a sobering reminder of the courage and willingness to sacrifice that U.S. Secret Service agents show every day”. Obama expressed relief over the injured agent’s recovery progress.
The incident itself occurred Saturday evening when an armed man attempted to storm the traditional “White House Correspondents’ Dinner” at a Washington hotel. A shootout broke out in a control area shortly before Trump was scheduled to speak. A Secret Service agent was struck by gunfire while wearing his protective gear but was reportedly not seriously injured. The perpetrator was subsequently arrested; he is a 31-year-old teacher who allegedly traveled from Los Angeles to Washington by train and had lodged at the hotel where the attack took place.
