German Police Threaten Strong Crackdown Amid May Day Protests and Riots Fears

Warnings from the Federal Police are circulating about potential riots scheduled for May 1st, and they have explicitly threatened a robust response.

Andreas Roßkopf, the chairman of the Police Union (GdP) for the Federal Police sector, told the “Rheinische Post” that it must be clear to all involved that any civil disturbances will be met with consistent and decisive action. He added that specialized police units are available in large numbers.

Roßkopf emphasized that violent outbreaks will result in severe criminal penalties. While the Federal Police currently have only 500 officers deployed in Berlin today, he noted the contrast with the local force: “The Berlin police are operating with around 5,000 personnel. It is absolutely clear that a robust intervention will be launched during violent disturbances”.
