Greens Urge Europe to Form Unified Response to Potential U.S. Troop Withdrawal from Germany

The Green Party has called for a unified, European-coordinated response in light of the United States announcing its intention to withdraw 5,000 soldiers from Germany.

Sara Nanni, the Bundestag faction’s security policy spokesperson, told the “Rheinische Post” that she hopes the Chancellor spends the day coordinating with Paris, Madrid, London, and Rome. Regarding whether Trump’s announcements will translate into action, she stated that only time will reveal the answer.

Nanni argued that it is now necessary to demonstrate precisely where and how dependent the U.S. is on Europe for the successful enforcement of its interests. She added that this pressure might encourage a figure like Trump to refrain from “betting too high”.

The spokesperson also criticized CDU leader Friedrich Merz for a perceived lack of commitment, noting his inconsistency regarding his relationship with the US President-shifting between closeness and distance. Despite this critique, she maintained that it is not too late for a change in course, emphasizing that the best way forward must be a coordinated European effort.
