Söder Urges Coalition to Accelerate Decision-Making Amid Political and Economic Pressures

Markus Söder, the Minister-President of Bavaria (CSU), has publicly urged the center-right federal government to accelerate its pace. According to Söder, who spoke to “Bild am Sonntag” the coalition partners must overcome any internal blockages in light of historically poor opinion polls and major economic crises. He stressed that decisions cannot be indefinitely delayed, calling for everyone to break free from ideological echo chambers.

Despite the difficulties of the first year in the current coalition led by Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), Söder remains committed to the government’s goals. While the hope of quickly getting the country back on track after the previous ‘traffic light’ coalition era has not faded, he indicated that external pressures-specifically citing US tariffs and the secondary energy crisis triggered by the war in Iran over five years-have intensified. This external pressure, Söder argued, necessitates faster internal progress, noting that the coalition is far from where it needs to be.

Furthermore, following concern over the high polling figures of the AfD party, the CSU chief cautioned against a potential paralysis of the ruling coalition and expressed growing anxiety over the functionality of democratic parliamentarianism. He drew a historical parallel, stating that Weimar did not collapse because of radical forces, but rather due to the exhaustion and fatigue of the democratic majority.

Söder refuted the accusation that Chancellor Merz is leading the country in an overly technocratic, corporate manner. While acknowledging that the overall outcomes have not yet met expectations, he maintained that Merz has performed well so far. Regarding reports of strong disputes between Merz and Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil (SPD), Söder avoided detailed commentary but emphasized the value of private disagreement, noting that such internal conflicts are important because they demonstrate passion and commitment.

Conclusively, Söder firmly dismissed any speculation regarding an early failure of the coalition. He labeled such thoughts as acts of “suicide stemming from fear of death” advising instead that the focus must be on building the patience necessary to tackle major issues.
