Ukraine Launches Massive Drone Attack on Russia, Citing Retaliation for Assaults

Over the weekend, Ukraine launched a massive drone attack against Russia. According to reports from Russian authorities on Sunday, the air defense system managed to intercept approximately 600 Ukrainian drones. These strikes covered an area spanning 14 Russian regions, including the Crimean Peninsula.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the assault as “completely justified” stating that it was a direct response to Russia’s ongoing attacks on Ukraine. The capital region of Russia was reportedly among the areas most affected by the onslaught. Zelenskyy issued a clear message to Russia: “Your state must end this war”. Russian sources indicated that four people were killed as a result of the attacks.

This incident follows a pattern of escalating conflict. In the previous week, Russia had launched a large-scale wave of attacks against Ukraine, during which an estimated more than 1,500 drones were utilized over the course of two days. Furthermore, recent mediation efforts brokered by the United States aimed at ending the hostilities have once again stalled. Additionally, a three-day ceasefire that had been put in place to commemorate the anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II has not been extended.
