Veggie Meat Alternative Production Slows Down Amid Steady Beef Consumption and Industry Shifts

Meat alternative production in Germany experienced a slight dip in 2025, following years of steady growth. According to data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the production volume of substitute meat products reached 124,900 tonnes in 2025, marking a 1.2 percent decrease compared to the 126,500 tonnes produced the previous year. Financially, the market also contracted slightly, with the value of meat alternatives falling 2.2 percent to €632.6 million in 2025, compared to €647.1 million the year before. Despite this minor setback, the sector has grown considerably overall; over the last six years, production has more than doubled, increasing from 60,400 tonnes in 2019.

In contrast, the traditional meat and meat product industry continues to dominate the market. In 2025, the entire sector generated a value of approximately €45.2 billion, a 2.0 percent increase from the €44.3 billion recorded in 2024. The production value of fresh meat far outweighs that of alternatives, being roughly 70 times larger. Historical data confirms this gap: in 2019, meat and meat products were valued at around €40.1 billion, representing approximately 150 times the value of meat alternatives, which were just under €0.3 billion that year.

Meanwhile, preliminary figures from the Federal Institute of Agriculture and Food show that the per capita consumption of meat has shown a slight upward trend recently. The average calculated meat consumption in Germany for 2025 was 54.9 kilograms per person, rising slightly above the rates seen in 2023 (52.9 kg) and 2024 (53.5 kg).
