In the alleged case of Chinese espionage involving a couple arrested in Munich, evidence has emerged pointing to connections with various German research institutions and a broader network linked back to Central China. According to the “Handelsblatt”, one of the arrested individuals is reportedly connected through the commercial register to other Chinese nationals. This associated entity is cited as dealing with the import and export of all types of goods, with a particular focus on high-tech products.
Furthermore, the report indicates that this network has maintained close ties to a university located in Central China. Sources suggest this university collaborates closely with German research facilities and also maintains connections with China’s defense research and industry.
The federal public prosecutor’s office has charged the arrested couple with allegedly working for a Chinese intelligence service. They are accused of actively trying to gain scientific information regarding high technologies that have potential military applications. To achieve this, the prosecutors allege that the couple cultivated contacts among academics and researchers at German universities and research facilities, particularly in the fields of aerospace engineering, computer science, and artificial intelligence.
