A significant shortage of lifeguards is critically affecting Germany’s public swimming pools. This problem was highlighted in a survey conducted by the Association of Municipal Utilities (VKU) among 94 pool operators across Germany.
According to the findings, as of May 1st, only 58% of the available positions were filled. The staffing gap is widespread: roughly 10% of positions remain vacant in almost every third pool, and some facilities report more than 30% of their jobs unfilled.
The article looked at artificial intelligence (AI) as a potential solution. Such technology-specifically intelligent camera systems-could monitor pool users and assist in rescue efforts. However, two major hurdles exist: the technology is expensive, and its use raises considerable data privacy concerns. Reflecting these concerns, the VKU found that a large majority of operators, 71% in total, stated they do not plan to implement AI within the next three years.
The survey was carried out between April 8th and April 24th, 2026. The German national day dedicated to lifeguards is observed on May 22nd.
