Uli Hoeneß argues that the SPD is principally responsible for the current crisis facing the government. According to Hoeneß speaking to “Spiegel”, he finds that the SPD partner lacks the understanding that they are the crucial element (the “last patron in the rifle”). He further stressed that if the left-wing members within the party fail to understand that their role in government is to advance Germany rather than to enforce their own ideological agenda, the situation will not improve.
Hoeneß also criticized Lars Klingbeil, who serves as the vice-chancler and co-head of the SPD, claiming that Klingbeil faces more difficulty achieving goals within his own party than he does finding solutions with the CDU. He specifically took issue with Klingbeil’s co-chair, Bärbel Bas, stating that “Ms. Bas is not exactly helpful”.
Hoeneß concluded with a dire warning: he stated that if the current administration collapses, the AfD would join the government, a development he describes as “the biggest catastrophe”.
