FDP Gains Minor Traction After Leadership Win, Yet Remains Below 5 Percent Barrier

According to “Bild am Sonntag” the FDP made a slight gain in the voter preference measured by the Insa institute following the decision in the contest for the party chairmanship, though it remains below the five-percent threshold. The party now registers at four percent, which is one percentage point higher than the previous week. This increase comes after former Bundestag Vice President Wolfgang Kubicki successfully won an internal power struggle against the North Rhine-Westphalia FDP chief, Henning Höne, last week.

The AfD remains the strongest political force in the poll with 29 percent support. The CDU/CSU (Union) holds steady at 22 percent. The Greens maintain their position at 14 percent, while the SPD remains at 12 percent. Die Linke increased its support by one point to eleven percent. The BSW sits at three percent, and the remaining parties collectively account for five percent, a decrease of two percentage points from the previous week.

Insa conducted the “Sunday trend” survey by questioning 1,203 individuals between May 18 and May 22, 2026.
