EU Parliament Criticizes Turkey Over Judicial Crackdown on Opposition Party CHP

The actions taken by the Turkish judiciary and police against the social democratic opposition party CHP are drawing the attention of the European Parliament. David McAllister, the German Member of Parliament and Head of the Foreign Affairs Committee, has called on the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to exercise restraint.

Speaking to the newspapers of Funke Media Group, McAllister asserted, “The Turkish government must ensure that political parties can work freely and that democratic procedures are maintained”. The recent developments in Turkey are a cause for significant concern. Democracy, the rule of law, and respect for fundamental rights were key requirements for Turkey’s EU accession process. As an EU candidate and a long-standing member of the Council of Europe, Turkey is expected to uphold and protect these core principles. He argued that restricting political rivals through legal means weakens democratic competition and erodes confidence in the judicial process.

McAllister’s comments come in response to the escalating situation in Turkey. Last week, a court annulled the CHP’s 2023 party congress, citing alleged vote buying, and subsequently removed the then-elected party leader, Özgür Özel. Özel is considered a potential challenger to President Erdogan, though he continues to dispute the court’s ruling. In several cities, CHP supporters have protested, most recently holding demonstrations in the Mediterranean city of Izmir.
