EU Foreign Policy Commissioner Kaja Kallas has warned the U.S. government against withdrawing soldiers from Europe. Speaking to Spiegel, Kallas stated that such an announcement would compel Europe to “invest even further in its own security”. However, she added that the downside for the United States is equally significant: if Europe becomes more independent of American protection, the U.S. risks losing its leverage and influence.
Kallas further argued that Washington’s political style puts not only trust and influence in Europe at risk but also raises doubts among countries that previously relied on American defense. She noted that these nations are increasingly uncertain whether the United States remains a reliable partner.
The Estonian official expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current transatlantic relationship, stating plainly that there is “nothing to gloss over”-the ties between America and Europe are under considerable pressure. While she maintains a good professional working relationship with U.S. Foreign Minister Marco Rubio, Kallas concluded by admitting, “Of course, I wish it were even better”.
