Record Warm and Sunny Spring 2026 in Germany Faces Severe Drought Conditions

The German Weather Service (DWD) reported preliminary findings on Friday, revealing that the spring of 2026 was exceptionally mild in Germany. The average temperature reached a projected 9.9 degrees Celsius, which is 2.2 degrees above the average of the 1961-1990 reference period. This makes the spring count among the ten mildest recorded since the beginning of weather observations in 1881.

Nationally, precipitation totaled about 126 liters per square meter, falling significantly short of the long-term average, achieving only about 68 percent. April was particularly dry, registering just over half of its expected rainfall. According to the calculations, Bavaria is on track to have the driest spring since 1881. In contrast, the most pronounced rainfall event occurred on April 19 in Röbel/Müritz, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where 83.4 liters per square meter fell within a single day.

Additionally, the sun shone exceptionally for around 692 hours, which is about 48 percent more than the target for the reference period. This marked the second consecutive record for sunshine after the already sunny spring of 2025. In certain regions, particularly in the north and northeast, the sunshine hours surpassed 750. Regarding warmer climates, the Saarland recorded the highest average temperature at 11.2 degrees, while Bavaria registered the lowest amount of rainfall at 101 liters per square meter.
