Germany’s Prien Pushes for Stricter Social Media Rules for Youth Amidst Focus on Parental Responsibility

The Federal Minister for Families, Karin Prien (CDU), insists on plans to introduce stricter regulations regarding the use of social media by children and adolescents. Prien confirmed to the newspaper “Bild” that the issue “is not off the table”. She added that they are currently awaiting the recommendations of an expert committee, which is due in June. Based on these recommendations, a comprehensive package of measures, including legislative rules, will be presented.

Previously, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) had expressed reservations against a blanket ban on social media. In response, Prien noted that Dobrindt pointed out that the focus should not solely be on prohibitions or age verification. Instead, he emphasized the need for “stronger responsibility from parents” and “improved media education” a point she explicitly shares. According to Prien, finding an “appropriate package of measures” can only be achieved by balancing protection, enabling skills, and participation.
