SPD Seeks Price Cap as Alternative to Tank Discount Extension

The SPD’s General Secretary, Tim Klüssendorf, argues that the fuel discount is not the best solution for keeping petrol prices affordable. Although Klüssendorf acknowledged that the fuel discount functioned well as a short-term measure in interviews with RTL and ntv, he stated that the SPD has better proposals, such as implementing a true price cap. Under this model, the state would establish a fixed price that fuel companies would then be required to follow.

“This works well in other countries; it is a market-shaping measure that does not cost taxpayer money and ensures that the companies do not make additional profits” Klüssendorf said, further noting that “this would actually be the significantly better measure”. When asked whether he opposes extending the fuel discount, he responded, “I believe it would not be the best solution”. However, he did not rule out an extension. From the SPD’s perspective, the optimal course of action now is to decide on a price cap. Klüssendorf concluded by adding, “We are discussing this with our coalition partner, and we will certainly find a solution once the fuel discount expires”.
