The SPD’s leading candidate for North Rhine-Westphalia, Jochen Ott, noted that the potential for left-wing alliances is growing. According to recent polling, a black-green majority in North Rhine-Westphalia is far from guaranteed, and he pointed out that “other governing coalitions are mathematically on the table,” telling the Funke media group.
Ott stressed that political responsibility requires stable governing majorities, clarifying that such majorities are “not automatically tied to a coalition with the Union.” He referenced recent discussions regarding a red-red-green coalition in Berlin, noting that some within the Union appear hesitant about this possibility. He warned that the current period of chaos among the Union could escalate into a period of anxiety.
In a separate statement, Ott distanced himself from the Left Party in Berlin, advising his own party to exercise caution. Following recent election activities and developments, he admitted to having lingering skepticism toward the Berlin Left Party. He emphasized that the core values of the SPD are non-negotiable, specifically citing the resolute fight against antisemitism, regardless of the political spectrum from which the aggressor comes. He expressed his hope that the SPD in Berlin would meticulously ensure during any future coalition negotiations that any forthcoming state government credibly combats hostility towards Jewish people and assigns the highest priority to fighting antisemitism.
