Niedersachsen Promotes New Unified Religious Education Model to Other States

Julia Willie Hamburg, the Minister of Culture for Lower Saxony (Green Party), is encouraging other federal states to adopt her new religious education model. Speaking to the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” she emphasized that she genuinely holds the view that this development is the right decision at precisely the right time.

The new subject, Christian Religion, is set to launch this summer in Lower Saxony. Over time, it is intended to replace the previous separate subjects, Evangelical Religion and Catholic Religion. The churches spent years negotiating the common curricula prior to this initiative.

The Minister acknowledged that the transition was not universally welcomed initially within the church circles. However, she pointed out that Lower Saxony is uniquely positioned to implement this model, benefiting from its robust ecumenical structure. She stressed that success here does not mean every state has immediate prerequisites to copy the approach; such fundamental educational changes typically unfold over decades.

Despite these complexities, Hamburg noted a growing interest in the project among her colleagues in other states. While the details are still becoming concrete, the initiative is now receiving considerable attention, and she has learned through church networks that many regions are watching the progress with growing curiosity.
