Despite heavy Russian attacks in Kyiv and threats made by Vladimir Putin, the German ambassador to Kyiv, Heiko Thoms, has stated that he will not leave Ukraine. Speaking to RTL and ntv, Thoms declared, “We certainly will not be intimidated by this”. He also pointed out that such overt threats against diplomats ultimately constitute a violation of international human rights law. “We are staying here” Thoms insisted.
Later this August, Thoms is scheduled to transition to his role as ambassador to Spain. He mentioned that he would miss “the wonderful people here who are trying to continue their lives despite everything” adding that the spirit of resistance they exhibit is deeply impressive.
