German Public Skeptical of Kubicki’s Leadership, Yet FDP Base Remains Optimistic

Most Germans do not believe that Wolfgang Kubicki can successfully lead the FDP into the future. According to a survey published by the ZDF Political Barometer on Friday, 56 percent of respondents hold this view, compared to 27 percent who are optimistic, and 17 percent who are unsure. Despite the general skepticism, a clear majority of FDP supporters-84 percent-are optimistic, which suggests Kubicki might gain some internal momentum within the party. Confidence is also relatively high among 38 percent of AfD voters and 33 percent of CDU/CSU (Union) supporters. However, support drops significantly among other groups: only 23 percent of SPD voters credit Kubicki with success in the FDP, and just 11 percent of both Green and Left Party supporters. Kubicki secured his position as FDP chairman during a recent internal contest against Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann. This internal leadership development comes after the party failed to clear the 5-percent threshold in the last federal election and subsequently lost its parliamentary representation.
