The CDU party leadership has altered its original plans, canceling the Presidential Session scheduled to take place in Magdeburg at the end of August. According to reports from party circles cited by Spiegel, this decision reflects Minister-President Sven Schulze’s priority to focus entirely on the upcoming election campaign in Saxony-Anhalt. The party’s top brass subsequently confirmed the cancellation of the meeting upon inquiry.
The main governing body of the CDU had initially chosen the state capital, Magdeburg, for the major conference. With the state election set for September 6th, the timing of the session is critical, especially since current polls show the AfD significantly ahead of Schulze’s CDU.
It has been reported that the Saxony-Anhalt state association voiced reservations regarding the national party’s session. The magazine notes that given the public dissatisfaction with Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s federal government, holding such an internal meeting during the campaign could prove detrimental.
Despite the change in plans, the CDU leadership stated that they fully understood the need for Sven Schulze to initiate final campaign mobilization in August rather than holding internal committee meetings. While Merz pledged to support Schulze during the campaign, other figures within the Union bloc are also scheduled for related political events.
