Steffen Bilger, who serves as the First Parliamentary Chairman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, has rejected calls to suspend the Bundestag’s traditional summer recess. Speaking to RTL and ntv on Saturday, Bilger argued that merely because it is the summer break does not mean members of parliament stop working. He emphasized that reporting discussions, meetings of working groups, and coalition roundtables occur regularly throughout the period. Furthermore, he explained that the cabinet operates continuously across the summer, making decisions that are then passed along to the Bundestag.
According to the Union politician, this ongoing work ensures they meet all their obligations, regardless of whether a formal summer pause is in effect. While committees could convene special sessions at any time, Bilger stated that such measures were not necessary currently. This refusal comes after the association of family business owners demanded that the Bundestag’s parliamentary break be suspended as an emergency measure due to the lack of completed reforms.
