CDU leader Friedrich Merz suggests that the Iran war is unlikely to come to a swift conclusion. Speaking in the CDU parliamentary group on Tuesday, Merz stated that the conflict is not over, adding that it “will not be going so quickly,” contrary to what President Trump had envisioned.
Looking ahead to the NATO summit in Ankara in early July, Merz told attendees that they would have to wait and see whether any viable prospect emerges by then. He also noted that if things do not improve, they could see “a probably very unpleasant President Trump” sitting at the negotiating table. Nevertheless, he emphasized the group’s commitment to engaging with Trump and making every possible offer.
In addition, Merz referenced “preparatory decisions” being made with France and the United Kingdom regarding the potential need to militarily secure the Strait of Hormuz. However, he stressed that such actions are dependent on both a ceasefire and an end to the fighting. Merz concluded by affirming that Germany is in close consensus with its allies on this matter.
