Left Party MP Ates Gürpinar has called on both the federal and state governments to improve public information regarding organ donation. Speaking to the Rheinische Post, Gürpinar stressed that national and state authorities must consistently work to ensure the vast willingness of people to donate is translated into many well-informed decisions. He lamented that the measures currently in place have been not only implemented inadequately but should, in fact, now be rolled back.
He specifically called for the reduction of bureaucratic hurdles surrounding documentation, proposing low-barrier access to the organ donation register and the ability to document decisions at local municipal offices. Furthermore, Gürpinar criticized the proposal to eliminate compensation for medical consultations on organ donation, pointing out that the current system already suffers from deficient hospital structures and a lack of a broad public awareness campaign.
Gürpinar is part of an inter-factional group within the Bundestag that is campaigning against the opt-out donation system. According to the current annual report from the organ donation register, approximately 570,000 declarations were recorded by February 2026, and roughly 90 percent of those declare willingness to consent to at least a partial organ or tissue donation.
