Eva von Angern, the Linke’s top candidate for Saxony-Anhalt, stated that she would consider supporting CDU Minister-President Sven Schulze after the state election, provided he abandons his right-wing rhetoric. During an interview on the Politico Berlin Playbook Podcast, von Angern addressed the potential for complicated majority situations following the elections scheduled for September 6th, noting that the AfD currently leads the CDU in polls.
She referenced past collaborations between the CDU and the Linke in the state parliament, citing achievements like the parliamentary reform, which demonstrated shared goals concerning the defense of democracy and an independent judiciary. However, von Angern insisted that any support would come with strict conditions. She stated that the CDU must cease singling out recipients of “Citizen’s Benefit” (Bürgergeld) negatively and instead commit to advocating for “poverty-resistant wages.”
Furthermore, von Angern distanced herself from recent strong statements by the new Linke chairman, Luigi Pantisano, who had labeled the CDU as “fascist.” She firmly refuted this characterization, asserting that neither the CDU nor its political agenda is fascist. While acknowledging that the CDU frequently utilizes right-wing narratives, she stressed that the party is “explicitly not a fascist party.” Instead, she concluded that it is fellow democrats who pursue different political agendas than those of the Linke.
