RB Leipzig has secured Martin Demichelis as its new head coach, taking over from Ole Werner, who had surprisingly stepped down. The 45-year-old Argentine signed a contract with the Bundesliga club that will run until June 30, 2028, according to a statement from the club on Monday. Most recently, Demichelis was working with the Spanish LaLiga side, RCD Mallorca.
Marcel Schäfer, the sport director, praised the signing, stating that Demichelis brings an impressive background, having gained experience as both a player and a coach across Europe, South America, and North America at the highest level. Schäfer added that this international perspective aligns perfectly with RB Leipzig’s global orientation, noting that Demichelis combines a “clear game plan with high intensity and professional competence.”
Demichelis expressed enthusiasm for the new role, citing the club’s ambitions as the main attraction. “I was convinced by the discussions with the management and the sports vision,” Demichelis stated. “RB Leipzig is an ambitious club with a clear idea, outstanding talent, and the ambition to continuously develop at the highest level. That exact challenge appealed to me.”
He assured fans that he respects the work done previously and intends to build upon it. “I want to form a team that plays bold, intense, and attractive football, takes responsibility, and thrills the people of Leipzig with its passion,” the new manager added.
Demichelis’s coaching career began modestly as an assistant coach at FC Malaga and with various youth teams at FCBayern. He returned to his native Argentina for the 2022/23 season, where he first took charge of a professional team at his youth club, River Plate. In his debut season in Buenos Aires, he led the club to the Argentine championship and two cup victories.
After two successful years and 87 official matches, Demichelis moved to Mexico. For the five-time champion CF Monterrey, the former defender took on the head coaching position in the 2024/25 season, reaching the Mexican championship final in 43 matches. His most recent posting before Leipzig was with RCD Mallorca.
