The Green party continues to regard the Left Party as a potential allied partner in the formation of the Berlin government. According to Andreas Audretsch, the Green party’s deputy spokespeople, the focus in Berlin is exceptionally clear: securing Kai Wegner for the Red Rathaus.
Audretsch told the television channel “Welt” that the ideal scenario involves the Greens becoming the strongest political force; once that position is achieved, the necessary partners will be determined, and the Left Party’s involvement will then be a key factor. Critically, he stressed that the Left Party must decide whether it is both capable and willing to govern.
This stance was presented despite the remarks by the new Left Party leader, Luigi Pantisano, who compared the party to fascism. Audretsch clarified that ultimately, policy content would determine the viability of a coalition with the Left. He asserted that the Left Party needs to prove its capacity to govern across the full spectrum of issues.
The Green politician added that their own internal policies are central to this discussion. “The content must be correct, and we naturally have key components in this,” he stated. “This includes addressing the major issues facing the city, particularly the housing crisis. Crucially, we also maintain clear bottom lines on specific issues, such as antisemitism. There will be absolutely no wavering from our side, in any way.”
