Japan, South Korea Bolster Defense Ties, Focus on AI and Advanced Technology

South Korea and Japan have agreed to deepen their defense cooperation, following a ministerial meeting held in Seoul. During the talks, the defense ministers established commitments to enhance collaboration in advanced fields, such as Artificial Intelligence, among other areas. A joint statement confirmed that the ministers will continue to promote the exchange and cooperation between the two countries’ air demonstration teams-the South Korean Black Eagles and the Japanese Blue Impulse. Furthermore, they decided to develop search and rescue drills for maritime emergencies and expand their joint efforts in cutting-edge science and technology.

This visit by Shinjiro Koizumi marked his first trip as defense minister and came after his counterpart, Ahn Gyu-back, visited Japan earlier this year in January. Beyond security cooperation, the ministers reaffirmed their commitment to achieving the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and establishing enduring peace in the wider region. They also agreed to maintain cooperation both on a bilateral level and in conjunction with the United States in a trilateral capacity.
