The European Investment Bank (EIB) has awarded Airbus a record loan package amounting to three billion euros. EIB President Nadia Calvino confirmed this deal to various outlets, including Handelsblatt, Bloomberg, and the Spanish newspaper El Pais. This financing is intended to bolster Europe’s aerospace and space industry, representing the largest corporate funding ever provided by the EIB.
The allocated funds will be directed toward research, development, and innovation across France, Germany, and Spain. These projects are scheduled to run until 2030 and span both civil aviation and critical security and defense technologies. According to the EIB, the scope includes key technologies, integrated systems, new manufacturing solutions, fuel-efficient propulsion, and networked systems relevant to aviation, space exploration, and defense.
A preliminary installment of one billion euros was signed in Brussels on Monday. Calvino stated that the entire EIB Group is committed to leveraging its power to reinforce Europe’s technological autonomy, industrial strength, and economic competitiveness. The “lighthouse project” secured approval in roughly six months. This rapid and substantial action demonstrates that the EU’s financial institution can move decisively to support its leading companies and maintain its competitive edge in the evolving geopolitical climate.
