The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office has charged a first suspect in relation to the attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines. The individual, who is Ukrainian, faces charges including attacking civil energy infrastructure, causing a bomb explosion, and the destruction of buildings.
According to the report, the suspect allegedly led a group that planted explosives on Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 near the island of Bornholm in September 2022. The group is reported to have used a sailing yacht, which was reportedly launched from Rostock, to transport the necessary materiel.
The explosives detonated on September 26, 2022, causing severe damage to both pipelines.
The suspect had previously been arrested in Italy last year following a European arrest warrant. He is currently being held in pre-trial detention in Hamburg.
