SPD Push: German Politician Advocates for EU Sanctions Against Israel Over Settlements

Ahead of the meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Brussels this Monday, SPD foreign policy expert Adis Ahmetovic has advocated for potential sanctions against Israel. Speaking to the German Editorial Network, he stated that Germany must facilitate a unified European position. While he acknowledged that Foreign Minister Wadephul is not expected to be the primary driver of the Middle East agenda in Brussels, he argued that given the clear violations of international law by Netanyahu and his government, the German position cannot function as a veto. He emphasized that German foreign policy should be judged by “law and rules.”

The meeting of the European Union Foreign ministers on Monday will cover the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine, alongside discussions about possible EU sanctions regarding the ongoing expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Until now, Germany has consistently rejected such demands. Currently, more than 20 EU member states oppose an import ban on products originating from illegal Israeli settlements.
