Coalition Savings Laws Threaten Improvements in German Emergency Care Reform

Janosch Dahmen, the health policy spokesperson for the Green Party, has welcomed the emergency care reform but cautioned that austerity measures implemented by the coalition within health insurance funds could ultimately undermine the intended improvements.

Speaking to RTL and ntv, Dahmen affirmed that the reform represents a major, positive structural overhaul that the healthcare system has awaited for years, stating it is positive that it is being approved by the Bundestag today.

However, the Green politician voiced serious concern that patients might soon face fewer routine medical appointments outside of emergency situations. He explained that when these forthcoming budget cuts for health insurance funds are combined with the current scarcity of specialist and even general practitioner appointments, the situation is worrying.

From his perspective, this dual pressure could jeopardize the success of the emergency care reform entirely. Dahmen expressed significant worry that the positive momentum of the reform could be wasted in settings where patients are already dependent on finding doctors, and those appointments are becoming increasingly scarce.

He strongly argued that it is pointless to direct people to avoid hospitals or emergency services if no viable alternative care is offered. He characterized these “lawnmower austerity laws” being applied to health insurance funds as a major danger to achieving a truly functioning and improved healthcare system.
