The German government hopes that the death of US Senator Lindsey Graham will not negatively affect transatlantic ties. Deputy government spokesperson Steffen Meyer told dts Nachrichtenagentur on Monday that Graham had been a “true friend and partner in the transatlantic alliance.”
The Senator, who passed away last weekend at the age of 71 following a “sudden illness,” was known as a prominent figure in the Senate, recognized as a key voice for his party on matters of defense and international affairs. He was also considered a close confidant of President Donald Trump and often acted as a mediator.
Meyer noted that Graham and other senators strongly advocated for tightening Russian sanctions, having discussed the matter with President Donald Trump just last week. “We are counting on Graham’s legacy to continue, and we hope for its implementation,” Meyer stated.
He added that increasing pressure on Russia from all sides remains essential to getting Russian President Vladimir Putin ready for “genuine negotiations.” “Support in this war and tougher Russian sanctions are certainly part of Senator Graham’s political legacy.”
