Greens Advocate for Europeanization of France’s Nuclear Deterrent While Rejecting a ‘European Bomb’

Addressing the German-French Ministerial Council, Agnieszka Brugger, Deputy Chair of the Greens parliamentary group, called for a strengthened European integration of French nuclear deterrence. Brugger told Politico that she views the current Franco-German collaboration, as proposed by France, as “a very wise path.”

She suggested that Germany should propose that France either “Europeanize” or at least “multilateralize” this cooperation to some degree. Brugger welcomed the French proposals for joint exercises and closer policy coordination. She clarified that the goal is not armament, stating, “We do not have a European atomic bomb, nor are we working on new nuclear arsenals in Europe.” Instead of nuclear buildup, she argued that they are “de facto not really conducting a nuclear upgrade, but rather increasing protection.”

However, the Green politician strongly rejects the idea of a European or German atomic bomb. She dismissed those proposals as “naive ideas” and challenged advocates of such a weapon by asking: “Who presses the button on the European atomic bomb?”
