Left Party Criticizes Jens Spahn Over “Questionable View” on Reproductive Rights and Surrogacy Use

As the debate surrounding the use of surrogacy intensifies, criticism is mounting against CDU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn.

Kathrin Gebel, the deputy faction chairwoman of Die Linke, told the “Rheinische Post” that Spahn’s actions reveal a long-standing and questionable understanding of reproductive rights. Gebel argued that while Spahn resorts to criminal law and mistrust when women require emergency contraception or wish to terminate a pregnancy, he opts to utilize the pregnancy of another woman to fulfill his own desire for a child, leveraging his financial means to seek options abroad. She stressed that “reproductive rights should not be dependent on bigoted morality or one’s bank account.”

This criticism comes in light of the fact that Spahn and his husband recently announced the birth of their child. The baby was born via a surrogate mother in the United States.

The use of surrogacy remains a highly controversial topic in Germany, where the practice is currently illegal. Critics point out that the CDU maintains a clear opposition to legalizing surrogacy, a position that Spahn himself has held in the past.
