SC Freiburg Rehires Yannik Engelhardt After Serie A Spell at Como

Mittelfeld player Yannik Engelhardt has transferred back to SC Freiburg from Como 1907, a move the Bundesliga club confirmed on Saturday.

Engelhardt previously trained with the SC Freiburg youth system from 2021 to 2023, though his most recent stint was a loan spell at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Last season, the 25-year-old played as a regular starter for the “Fohlen” (Freiburg team), making 33 appearances.

Prior to his time in Germany, Engelhardt spent the 2024/25 season with Como in Italy’s Serie A, making 26 appearances in the highest Italian division. His early career began at Fortuna Düsseldorf, where he appeared in 37 matches but the team ultimately failed to gain promotion to the Bundesliga. During his initial phase at SC Freiburg, he wore the U23 team’s jersey 54 times in the 3. Liga.

SC Freiburg Sporting Director, Klemens Hartenbach, praised Engelhardt for his structurally valuable qualities, emphasizing that the connection between the two parties has never been broken. Engelhardt himself stated that his bond with the SC was never severed, and he is happy about the “warm welcome” in Freiburg. While the specifics of his contract remain confidential, Engelhardt will be wearing the number 16.
