Following Jens Spahn’s resignation as Chairman of the CDU parliamentary group, the Federal Government has stated that it sees no need to intervene regarding Federal Drug Commissioner Hendrik Streeck (CDU), who is also reportedly the father of a child born via a surrogate mother in the United States.
Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius told the dts Nachrichtenagentur on Monday that the government would not participate in a debate concerning Mr. Streeck. Kornelius stressed that while Streeck confirmed the parenthood and the birth of his son, he has no longer commented on the matter. “There is thus no public statement about the circumstances, and this is in part to protect the child’s family privacy, which we ask to be respected,” he added. The spokesperson concluded by stating that there is “no appearance of double standards” concerning Streeck.
This situation arose after the magazine “Bunte” had previously reported in April that Streeck and his husband became parents to a son born in the US. The magazine quoted the Federal Drug Commissioner agreeing to the confirmation, stating: “Yes, we can confirm that we have become parents. We are overjoyed by the birth of our son. Suddenly, there is a completely new meaning in our lives.”
Separately, CDU Federal Chairman Friedrich Merz had characterized Jens Spahn’s resignation as “right” and “unavoidable” on Saturday, emphasizing that “credibility is the highest good in politics.” It is worth noting that Spahn had previously advocated for the surrogate mother model to remain illegal in Germany-a stance that was reaffirmed at the CDU federal party convention this spring.
