Merz and Burnham Discuss Strengthening UK-German Ties and Ukraine Support

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) spoke with Andrew Burnham, the new British Prime Minister, via telephone. Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius reported on Monday that Merz congratulated the Prime Minister on taking office. Both leaders expressed their desire to continue “close cooperation between the two countries” and advance the implementation of the Kensington Agreement. Regarding the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Merz and Burnham agreed that Ukraine must continue to be “comprehensively supported” and that “pressure on Russia” should be increased. They shared the objective of conducting “serious negotiations” to achieve a “just and lasting peace.”
