The parliamentary group of the Union (CDU/CSU) plans to hold a special session next week to elect a new group leader following the resignation of Jens Spahn. Steffen Bilger, the group’s first parliamentary director, anticipates that the total of 208 members will show high attendance at the meeting.
According to Bilger, who spoke to the news portal T-Online, a strong mandate is necessary for the new leader. He expects many colleagues to participate in the special session even though it falls outside regular working hours, stating that “high participation is an important sign of the unity and responsibility of our faction.”
The Union parliamentary group is scheduled to gather in Berlin on July 29th at 2:00 PM to choose a successor. The right to propose candidates for the leadership position lies with the party leaders of the CDU and CSU, Friedrich Merz and Markus Söder.
