An international meeting planned in collaboration with the United States to combat left-wing extremism is scheduled to take place in Germany in the autumn of 2026, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior. A ministry spokesperson informed T-Online that the event is currently slated for Autumn 2026, though the planning stages are still in their early phases and further details have not yet been confirmed. The decision regarding the participation of Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) in the “workshop at the specialist and expert level” will be made at a later date.
The groundwork for closer collaboration began with an international meeting in Washington on July 16, attended by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. During this meeting, Rubio announced his intention for the next event to be held in partnership with German entities. Last week, “Der Spiegel” cited the Federal Ministry of the Interior, reporting that this would be a “workshop for specialist experts” and would take place in Germany “for logistical reasons.”
The Federal Ministry of the Interior further stated that Germany had expressed its willingness to host such an event during the July 16 conference, noting that this was in “its own security policy interest.” The spokesperson pointed to the attack on the Berlin power supply earlier this year as evidence that Germany is directly affected by left-wing extremist violence. Concurrently, the ministry highlighted that German authorities possess extensive experience and analytical capabilities in this field, affirming that “combating left-wing extremism is a priority concern of the Federal Ministry of the Interior.”
In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio promoted the need for better, cross-border coordination and more intensive information exchange. The Federal Ministry of the Interior replied to inquiries that technical exchange regarding extremist-motivated violence is already established with international partners and is ongoing. Any data exchange is conducted strictly based on applicable legal regulations and data protection requirements. They added that “no new instruments or procedures were created following the conference.”
