Following the fatal drive-by attack during Berlin’s CSD celebration, the General Federal Prosecutor’s Office appears set to take over the investigation, pending the fulfillment of legal requirements. According to reporting citing Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig, the General Federal Prosecutor’s Office is already in communication with the authorities in Berlin.
The perpetrators are still being sought. Investigators suspect the attacker is an adherent of the “Islamic State” terrorist militia. A 21-year-old identified as Abdul B. reportedly drove a small van into the Tiergarten in Berlin late Saturday evening around 10 p.m., where CSD participants were celebrating. He crashed into a tree before fleeing the scene.
Reports indicate that one woman was killed and 16 others were injured during the incident. Authorities have currently stated that “one or several individuals” departed from the vehicle, and several people sustained injuries from stabbing tools. The presence of an accomplice remains unclear.
The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has requested assistance from international agencies across the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, and Austria as part of the expanded search efforts.
