Despite a considerable increase in gasoline prices, the black-and-red coalition is currently not planning any further relief measures for drivers. According to Sepp Müller, deputy of the CDU parliamentary group, further steps are not planned at this time. The CDU politician added that he has asked Energy Minister Katherina Reiche to examine the possibility of releasing additional volumes of oil from reserve stocks, which could have a price-dampening effect. Müller is a co-chair of the coalition’s task force, which monitors the development of gas prices.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs is also not planning immediate price relief. A spokesperson told the newspaper that a roundtable discussion would take place after the summer months, while confirming the ministry continues to monitor gasoline price trends very closely. Earlier, in June, Müller and his SPD colleague Armand Zorn announced that the coalition was prepared to stop a significant rise in gasoline prices if necessary. They had stated at the time that if the situation changed dramatically starting July 1st, they could react quickly, even during the summer holiday and non-session period.
