Following recent events in Ceuta, the SPD in the Bundestag is pushing for the decisive implementation of the common European asylum system (Geas). Sonja Eichwede, the deputy faction chairwoman, told the “Rheinische Post” that “to counteract upcoming migration movements, legal, operational, and communication measures ultimately have to work closely together. The consistent implementation of the common European asylum system, which has just come into force, is crucial for this.”
Commenting on the incidents of the past few days, Eichwede stated that the Spanish exclave of Ceuta has become the target of what appears to be a managed migration movement. According to the SPD politician, this situation has been exploited as an attempt to divide Europe. She claimed that the movement was apparently directed by rumors and targeted misinformation. Eichwede demanded that Europe must collectively and firmly oppose this “perfidious and criminal business” conducted by human smugglers, which jeopardizes human lives.
