Hendrik Wüst, the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, has stated that he is currently not planning to replace Friedrich Merz (CDU) as Federal Chancellor. According to Wüst, the Chancellery is “currently not an option.” He emphasized that his working relationship with Merz is very effective, noting that more unfounded rumors seem to be circulating externally than reality suggests. Despite acknowledging that they are different individuals with two decades separating them and varied experiences, Wüst assured listeners that they work together very professionally.
In late May, there were reports within the CDU speculating that Wüst might replace Merz in a potential “chancellor swap,” an idea Wüst had previously dismissed as “nonsense.” However, he reaffirmed a past comment that he would not rule out a possible candidacy at a later date. He reasoned that when governing a state as large as North Rhine-Westphalia-a microcosm reflecting Germany’s strengths and challenges-one should never definitively say “Never.”
